| | 'We prefer a more educational, promotional approach so that we really convert the employers', Mr Gan said. -- ST PHOTO: ALPHONSUS CHERN |
http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_422327.html This is why you really have got to love our Minister for Manpower Gan Kim Yong. He is concern with Singaporeans stressful and unbalanced work-life and so he is promoting special programmes to companies that will help workers balance their work-life. The Government would give up to
$20,000 per company to help finance such policies.
Examples like a day off for employees on their child's first day of school, or time out to take an elderly parent to see a doctor - these are just some ways businesses can provide for better work-life balance. So last time these employers wouldn't give a hoot if your child was on his/her first day of school or if your sick elderly grandma was in critical condition. Now, they do care. Aww so sweet.
And if you are juggling with raising a child and working at the same time, don't worry, the fund supports pro-family programmes like the building of nursing, family or day-care rooms at the workplace. Original! You can now multi-task your work-life at your work place! Lunch time you can visit your grandma at the nursing or you can breast feed your baby at the childcare. Great!
Mr Gan also added that after all it makes business sense to offer such arrangements as it will benefit the bottom line in being flexible. See, they really love you workers. *tears of joy*
And then suddenly you remember how a certain civil servant could take 5 weeks off to go to France and cook spaghetti? What kind of out-of-this-world-work-life balance was that?! For MIW to know and for workers to find out. *more tears of joy*
Okie... Time out.
Here's where any sane person after reading our Nation Building News takes out his/her calculator and hits some buttons.
575 X S$20,000 =
S$ 11,500,000 That's S$ 11,500,000 for 575 unionised companies.
Mr Gan will not make it compulsory for all companies in Singapore to adopt these flexi-work arrangements, but will instead charge the employers of these unionised companies to demonstrate the effectiveness of these programmes first.
And taxpayers not from unionised companies say... : "Thanks for using the money..."
If there are any errors in the figures, please don't blame me hor, I got the figures from MSM. They more in-credible than me. Also read:

i never get to enjoy work-life balance ... i always do work-work lah! lolz.
@anonymous - @chenmeicai - It's quite easy to understand Mr Gan's point of view. To not legislate is to save money. Once you legislate, he has tons of paper work to do. He has to address his new policy to parliment. It has to be vetted by parliment. Maybe kenna scolded by MM Lee. And after all, Mr Gan is all about bottom lines and rice bowl.
You have one very smart HR tycoon and you have a clown without a portfolio to see to it that workers work and work. Thanks to meritocracy, you now have the right to be a lesser mortal.
