oh dear...soon we'll be extinct....should we be on the endangered species list? lol
@jerlise - I think in a matter of another 5 years, we can safely call ourselves that.
Ever figure why there's a big fuss when some Singaporeans are caught having sex? Because we are going extinct, like Pandas... :P :P :P
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has calculated the percentage of endangered species as 40 percent of all organisms based on the sample of species that have been evaluated through 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endangered_species) still a ways to go..
*Yikes*
@BiRdYz - Thanks to the "Stop at 2" policy ...right now when they are pushing citizens to create more babies, it's a very up hill task. That policy is the ultimate stumbling block for the nation in a current environment that is not in favour of bringing up a child. Expensive living, expensive HDB flats, Expensive this and that, pink IC treated like 2nd class citizen, who in the right mind is cheering? Maybe those who are well-to-do or those carrying the balls of the those dressed in white.
Is this topic about growing foreigner population or overcrowded? Your title and contents do not match. If you want to talk about being overcrowded, then you should be calculating and breaking down the density - number of people per sq metre or something -, instead of using population figures of citizens, PRs and non-citizens. If you use the density calculation, the point of overcrowded would have much more punch.
@Jezebella - Thanks for bringing this up. Okie, for more crystal clearer information, kindly refer to the Key Annual Indicators picture which I posted up for your viewing pleasure (second picture on the right - in case you missed it. Yes, it's there. Go ahead click on it. Tadah!), which states that the population density is 6,814 per Square Kilometer. Which also means that there are about 6 people for every square meter. That's a hack lot of people.
And Jezebella, the answer to your question is ..this topic is about the shrinking numbers of Singaporean citizens. Do you want to help us boost the number of locals? We are a dying breed. :)
@ErniesUrn - Well, I doubt the current low birth rate has anything to do with the 2-child policy. The fact being that Singaporeans felt it is too expensive to raise a child, and thus some gave up having kids, or just have a number where they can manage - 1 or 2. So the foreigners are brought in to keep up with the population growth. And since these cash rich foreigners (since our 'good' and 'intelligent' gahmen only grants PR and citizenship to the talents and high earners.) would compete with Singaporeans for the same resources. That is evident in how some foreigners would pay $50,000 or even $80,000 (as in a little note I received recently in my mailbox) for our HDB flat. And there is only ONE outcome to this - INFLATION.
What happen next is the burden of Singaporeans increases and as it gets even more expensive, birth rate remains low. This means the 'foreign-import policy' is maintained, which will only keep the inflation going.
We are thus trapped between a rock (i.e. low birth rate due to high living cost) and a hard place (i.e. cash rich foreigners coming in to drive living cost even higher). And even if we pay Baby Lee 30 million a year and his ministers 15 million a year to figure out a good idea, this will be the only one they can think of. :P
@ErniesUrn - Haha. I happen to be one of those who's not interested in marriage and child-raising. At least not yet. So don't look at me. :D But yes, Singapore is getting very crowded. Singapore was never meant for this many people.
@Jezebella - Yeah I agree with you. I won't be looking at you.
Yes, it definitely very crowded now. Not a ghost in sight as even the ghosts complain to me about lack of vicinity for haunting activity and increasing number of foreign ghosts. Many have migrated to our next door neighbor due large area for haunting and more over, will not treated as second citizen ghost. Ghost here has no dignity, let alone human.
